Summer Workshop Audition Information

Dear Students and Parents,

Auditions for summer placement for the 2019 Judith Svalander School of Ballet Pre-Professional Workshop will take place on Saturday, March 2nd at the studio from 3:30pm-5:30pm. This is a comprehensive 6 week training toward a professional career in dance. Students accepted into our unique JSSB Summer Intensive will experience what it is like to work as a professional dancer and finish the course with a definite improvement and edge to their technique, understanding, and level of dance ability as well as keen performance awareness. Students have the best of both worlds with guest teachers as well as faculty familiar with and ready to improve on your child's strengths and weaknesses.

There are many people that think you need to leave your home school and travel to a summer program that is expensive and far away. The reality is many studios are not able to offer an extensive training program all year long like JSSB is able to. We are extremely eager and excited to offer this opportunity to our students and guests; and see potential for wonderful growth this summer. Unless Mrs. Svalander spoke personally with you about another program, the JSSB Pre-Professional course is your recommended course of training this summer at JSSB. Read on for audition information.

What to expect: Dancers should prepare for a two hour ballet class consisting of center barre, adagio combinations with balances, turns and jumps, modern center floor combination with various expressions, and pointe work. This audition is the way Mrs. Svalander and faculty will choose students for two levels. Advanced Pre-Professional Level; dancers must be 14-18 years. Intermediate Pre-Professional Level; Dancers must be 11-16 years.

Does it cost to audition? There is a $20 audition fee for each dancer due by March 2nd, before the start of the audition.

Who can audition? This audition is open to Company, Advanced, Advanced Intermediate, Level VI, Level V and students coming for the summer intensive from other schools.

What happens after the audition? Dancers will be notified of acceptance and level placement no later than March 18th, and must register by April 6th with a $200 nonrefundable deposit. This deposit will be deducted from your tuition.

What if my child doesn't want such intensive work this summer? Dancers in the Advanced & Intermediate Levels not auditioning are welcome to continue classes in the adult/multilevel ballet program for the summer.

Can we audition if we can't commit to the full course? No. Due to limited space, priority is given to those dancers committed to the entire summer course from June 24th-August 9th. Do not audition if you are not intending to take the full course; however you may continue in the adult/multilevel program.

What if we can't attend the audition? All dancers must audition for placement in the Advanced or Intermediate Pre-Professional summer course.

How does my child get into the Company? Positions for the Judith Svalander Dance Theater Company are by invitation only. They do not occur automatically. A dancer may be invited to train with the Company/Trainee level.

Crystal Lake Festival of the Lights Parade

We have decided to join in this year's Crystal Lake Festival of the Lights Parade on Friday, November 23rd at 7:00pm. The Festival of Lights Parade is the traditional start to the holiday season when Santa Claus comes to town and is filled with lights, music, pageantry, and a little magic! The parade ends at the corner of Williams & Crystal Lake Avenue, when Santa throws his magic dust to light the 40-foot Community Christmas Tree!

We are very excited to be adding a special event to the calendar this year, but we need your help!

If willing, we are looking for the following:

  • Convertible or Pick-up truck: transport our Beautiful Clara and Nutcracker Prince or our Snow Queen on their way to the land of snow (car will need to be available prior to parade start time for light decorating)

  • Dancers to march along the parade route: Due to parade rules and regulations, this will be a limited Please understand that we cannot use everyone and appreciate your willingness to help in other ways.

  • Parents/dancers to help craft/decorate/make props and decorations for the parade

  • Parents to help before, during and after the parade (getting dancers ready and safely to and from the parade)

Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering your time or skills to help us make this a successful parade appearance.

Even if you aren't available to help or participate, please consider supporting your fellow dancers and watch the parade, right down Woodstock street!

Thank you!
